Watching Tom Hanks as the Castaway guy rub just about all of the skin off his hands trying to light one lousy fire made us realise how much he would have appreciated having one of these babies on his key ring. If only.

Originally developed for the Swedish Department of Defense, Swedish FireSteel is a flash of genius (sorry, cutting and pasting from the promotional blurb). Its 3,000°C spark makes fire building easy in any weather, at any altitude.

Used by a number of armies around the world (nice and vague), Swedish FireSteel's dependability has already made it a favorite of survival experts, hunters, fishermen and campers. It has also found its way into cabins and backyards as a fool-proof way to light stoves and gas barbecues. Also, its super bright spark can be used as emergency signal.

Lasts for from 3,000 to 12,000 strikes for the Scout and Army models respectively. Works equally well when wet.

Once the technque is mastered, this works really well. We use it in the R.F.S. to light drip torches etc.

I bought one of these for my husband and it's been a great success. We don't have the maya dust - it strikes fine on paper or wood. All our friends who have seen it work want one too, a few had trouble using it, but were ok after a few lessons.

Julia Philips

Julia Philips has given this product a 1 star rating | meh
It's a great idea. I bought one for bushwalking so I didn't have to worry about matches getting wet etc, but it doesn't seem to work all that well. It sparks but just doesn't catch (even with the "magic" Maya dust)
