Dinosaur Designs is an authentic and high quality Australian brand with even more history than ours.
Longtime CustOMERs Louise Olsen, Stephen Ormandy and Liane Rossler met while studying drawing and painting at a Sydney art school in 1983. They formed Dinosaur Designs in 1985 and began selling handprinted fabrics and painted jewellery at Paddington Markets. The intuitive creativity that shapes their distinctive work in jewellery and homewares has also informed the development of an extraordinary business. Dinosaur Designs now stands as one of the most visible and successful design-based businesses in Australia, operating its own stores in Sydney, Melbourne and New York as well as exporting to more than twenty countries worldwide.
Brian Parkes, Curator of Object Gallery in Sydney says:
"Olsen, Ormandy and Rossler have managed to intersect the boundaries between art, craft, design, fashion and business without pause, and have applied the same creative energy and focused vision to each new opportunity. They have forged an important place for themselves within Australian design history, not only through their longevity and popularity but also through the distinctively Australian character of their work, with many of the colours and forms they use evoking the casual lifestyle and vibrant natural landscape of Australia."
And here's what Remo said in the catalogue that documented the Dinosaur Designs retrospective at that gallery in 2003:
"I have watched the Dinosaurs closely for many years, and I love what they do. Liane, Louise and Stephen have approached their work with flair, passion and remarkable focus. It is rare but reassuring to find people with both the vision and stamina to create and produce over the long haul. Here today ... here tomorrow ... and the day after, and so on ... continual reinvention and refinement. That's how valuable brands get built."
Louise, Stephen and Liane have been CustOMERs and friends since the very early days. We buy gifts from one another's ranges. We swim at the same beaches. Our kids go to the same schools.
But, despite this, it has taken us almost 20 years to figure out how best to represent their huge body of work within the context of the REMO General Store.
Here then, and after much to'ing and fro'ing with the Dinosaur Designers on range and colour, is our initial selection for Dinosaur Designs at REMO:
+ BANGLES
There are three types of resin Bangles: Wishbone, Small Band & Large Band. They come in 4 colours: Ivory, Black, Tortoise Shell & Solid Red. The Bangles have an internal diameter of 6.5cm. We're told by the folks at Dinosaur Designs that this size fits most women.
+ NECKLACES
The classic "River Rock" Necklaces come in 4 lengths: Long (110cm), Medium (90cm), Long Choker (52cm with clasp) & Short Choker (42cm with clasp). They come in the same 4 colours: Ivory, Black, Tortoise Shell & Solid Red.
CARE: Resin is strong and durable but should be treated as a ceramic as it can break if dropped or knocked against a hard surface. To restore sheen, apply a little moisturiser.
+ ROMAN DISHES & JAPANESE SERVERS
The resin Roman Dishes come in 5 sizes: Salt (6.5cm diameter), Small (12.5cm), Medium (18cm), Large (22.5cm) & Extra Large (31cm). The matching resin Japanese Servers come in two sizes: regular (24cm long) & Long (29cm long). The Salt Spoon is 8cm long and goes with the Salt sized Roman Bowl. We've chosen two colours: Ivory & Amber. Really nice.
CARE: All Dinosaur Designs homewares are suitable for food presentation and are dishwasher safe to 60 degrees Celsius (140 Fahrenheit). On occasion the translucent resin versions may appear frosted after washing. Should this happen, simply apply a little cooking oil to restore sheen.
Each Dinosaur Designs object is made by hand and with tender loving care in their Sydney studio. Each piece is unique and bears the slight variations of its creator. Treated with the same love and care with which it was made and by following some simple care instructions, your new Dinosaur object should last you a life time.
