Seek and ye shall find chocolate!

It took a long time, but we finally found a quality chocolate brand for 21st Century REMO that was worthy to replace the hole left by Haigh's from Adelaide (our 20th Century chocolate partner).

We had to look outside Australia for passionate and serious chocolatiers (like Haigh's) who roasted their own cocoa beans and produced their chocolate "bean to bar", rather than using externally sourced cocoa liquor extract.

Whittaker's was founded in New Zealand in 1896 by James Henry Whittaker. Today the company is controlled by Andrew and Brian Whittaker, the third generation.

Throughout Whittaker's history the objective has always been: "To produce high quality, premium tasting confectionery at an affordable price."

All of Whittaker's range is produced from the one factory in Porirua (up in the hills near Wellington on the southern tip of the North Island). Having said this, the first step in making Whittaker's chocolate actually begins in West Africa. Only cocoa beans from Ghana are selected because they are among the highest quality beans in the world, well capable of yielding a premium quality chocolate.

Slabs, Blocks & Squares

Whittaker's is most famous for its single-serve Peanut Slab chocolate bar (see CustOMER Comments below), a chocolatey, peanuty treat that was first launched in the early 1950s. The product has become one of New Zealand's most iconic brands and is still one of the best selling chocolate bars in the country today. More recently the Coconut Slab variety has been added.

In a major move for Whittaker's in the mid-1990s, a family-sized 250 gram Peanut Block product was launched. This was quickly followed by the Fruit & Nut, Hazelnut, Creamy Milk, Almond Gold and Dark Block varieties (containing no milk solids at all). In subsequent years, further ranges have been added, including White Chocolate and the cocoa-rich Dark Ghana 72% Cocoa block (currently the biggest seller in the range). The development of the Whittaker's 250 gram block range has been hugely successful. Indeed, in its native New Zealand, Whittaker's is no small player and now holds a strong position in this very competitive category.

Whittaker's Squares (coming soon to REMO) are the most recent addition to the range, ideally suited to complement a cup of coffee. The squares contain 10.5 grams of premium quality chocolate and are each individually packaged.

Q: All sounds good, but what does it TASTE like?
A: GREAT ... REMO staffers have been testing for weeks!

Finally, in terms of pedigree, it is relevant to note that all of Whittaker's cocoa beans are purchased through the Ghanaian Cocoa Board, the government body responsible for the marketing of Ghanaian Cocoa Beans. As well as being committed to the eradication of any form of abusive labour practices in the global supply of cocoa, Whittaker's have also partnered with World Vision on the building of a health centre in the Twifu Praso district in Ghana, believing it to be a further positive way to help the people of the area.

REMO welcomes Whittaker's Chocolate!

My Dad has always loved Whittakers Peanut Slabs. We are from NZ so grew up on the stuff. Always a good stand by for Fathers Day and birthdays. My most potent memory was the entire box of slabs that my Mum bought for Dad when he had a vasectomy. The chocolates and the frozen peas made an uncomfortable couple of days more tolerable. Still love eating it, thanks Remo for supplying it.

With a kiwi husband, I could do no wrong by lacing my last Remo order with a Whittaker's chocolate block. I too am a coconut fetishist and would order that emperor of all nuts as the main flavouring for each and every course of a meal, but next time I am trying the white chocolate block. Everyone who knows New Zealand knows this: it is the land of the long white chocolate!

The chocolate is great, but even more so are the peanuts - where do they get them? They're much smaller than average and so, so tasty. Enrobed in milk chocolate they make a perfect combo.

Well we have been here in NZ 2 years and the Dark Ghana is an after dinner evening tradition now. BUT, you gotta know when to stop tho. The spicy ginger is worth a try. Those kiwis are into extreme, mad sports and great chocolate.

We started a new hobby last year eating dark chocolate. We have been doing the whole regional varietal thing reminiscent of the whole single bean coffee thing. Well this stuff is magnificent. There is a thickness of texture, low melt point, great snap and all the things that you would expect that would make this a delight. Oh it tastes good too.

When it comes to chocolate I can be quite fussy, so I am always cautious when someone raves about product that I've never tried. Well, thank YOU REMO for sending me a Coconut Slab as part of my VSC gift... I used to be a big fan of Golden Rough until Rowntree was bought out by Nestle (boo)... I thought the Coconut Slab would be kind of like a Bounty, but no! - it is toasted coconutty goodness mixed into the chocolate. (yay!)

I am sitting here munching on the ginger block and I'm in heaven! I can't get this chocolate anywhere near me so it is such a relief to be able to order it at REMO. I am also very relieved to find an ethically produced chocolate that tastes awesome! Believe you me I have been looking around and the three brands that I found do not taste nearly as good as this stuff :)

As I have a Kiwi partner and visit frequently, we always have orders from oz for the Kiwi Fruit variety, which you can't buy here. I know it sounds awful (little chunks of dried kiwi fruit inside)- but this one is the absolute best Whittakers. What about getting this variety for Remo? One day customs is going to stop us with the 20 blocks we bring back!

Two of my dearest friends are Aussies living in NZ. I spent a Christmas with them not long after they moved there and on Christmas day waiting under the tree for me was a Santa sack of NZ delicacies - one of which was the Whittakers Peanut Slab. I spent the next week of my trip to NZ eating ice cream cones (they sell the stuff at every local "dairy" over there) and Whittaker's Peanut Slabs. The New Zealand Ice Cream you get here isn't the same stuff - but the Whittaker's Peanut Slabs are! And now thanks to Remo I'll be able to try some of the other Whittaker's goodies...

Theresa Hingston has given this product a 5 star rating | MMMMMMM Peanut Slab
The peanut slab brings back memories of childhood pocket money spent at the corner shop - in those days there was no trendy packaging, literally just slabs of chocolate in a small box on the counter for just a few cents. I have to say though, that my current favourite is Dark Ghana 72% - excellent for those of us watching our weight, it has less fat than other chocolate and it tastes fantastic.

Remo Giuffre

Remo Giuffre has given this product a 5 star rating | Seeking & Finding | A Merchant's Tale
Most of the new ideas for REMO are NOT mine, but I AM going to take credit for this one. Here's how it unfolded: I was at the "House of Chocolates" on Bondi Road (a favourite local haunt) hunting and gathering the customary loose pieces of milk chocolate covered Turkish delight for DVD watching family. While at the counter I spotted a "Whittaker's Peanut Slab" with nice ye olde graphics and thought to myself ... anything that has can boast the word "SLAB" in its product description belongs within the Special Things portfolio at REMO. So, I added one to the bag of Turkish delight and trotted off home. After sharing said slab with the family (very nice) I went to the company website (url printed on the packaging) and had a poke around. I was impressed with the blocks range and LOVED the fact that this chocolate was produced amidst the relative purity of the New Zealand environment. The real hook however was discovering that they roasted their own beans ... just like Haigh's. The merchant in me awakened ... big time. We contacted the company and did some research. All good. Dare we hope? It would all come down to the TASTE of the chocolate blocks. Whttaker's sent us some samples. I was home at the time writing the weekly broadcast. Melanie called to say: "Darling, you won't believe what just arrived ... a LOT of chocolate from Whttaker's." So ensued the staff take-home-pack allocation ... and the receipt of glowing reports all round (even from fussy Glenn)! That was a week ago ... and here we are launching. Things happen quickly in REMO World, especially when they feel so right!

Mmm, this is nice. At first I thought 'well, it's not as good as Haigh's', but that's a lot to live up to, and it's growing on me. I have only tried the milk chocolate so far, so I'll have to try the others just to check that they're all this good!

This is seriously good chocolate. Definitely up there at the top of the Australasian brands that can be purchased in supermarkets. But that's where I'm perplexed. At least in Sydney, this is supermarket chocolate. Haigh's chocolate can only be bought from a Haigh's shop - and these are few in number. This, together with the quality, makes it a Special Thing. The ubiquity of Whittaker's makes it no less delicious but somehow less "special". That said - if Whittaker's ISN'T to be found in your local supermarket, buy a bar or two or three and tuck in!!!
