THEY'RE BACK! NEW & IMPROVED.

In Australia alone there are around 3,000 species of spider. Many of them are potentially harmful, a lot are required for anti-venom purposes and some are of benefit to keep the flies and mozzies away.

Even so, it took an Irishman from Fermoy in County Cork to come up with the most effective, useful and eco-friendly "Spider Catcher" of all time. Inventor Tony Allen came up with the idea after spending years balancing on beds and wardrobes trying to remove spiders from his son's bedroom.

The Spider Catcher uses two sets of bristles to gently catch the spider or bug, carefully trapping it until you decide when and where to let it go ... unharmed! Because of its flexible bristles and long reach, it can get into high corners and awkward spots to capture pesky little beasts without you having to go near them.

After acquiring a Spider Catcher from Europe, Des Harris in Australia discovered that it was effective on Redbacks, Golden Orbs, St Andrew's Cross and small House spiders, wasps, moths etc. However, larger, strong feisty Huntsman and Funnel Web spiders were more aggressive and escaped its grips. After teaming up with the inventor, Des tested about 25 different versions changing various components and monitoring the results.

Basically, we needed heavy duty stronger components to deal with the heavy duty, stronger Australian spiders!

The bristle head has now been designed to make sure our spiders can be caught effectively. A special hooked bristle has been designed and manufactured in Australia especially for the Huntsman spider, which tends to lie flat against surfaces. Testing for a successful prototype was carried out at Spiderworld, part of the Australian Reptile Park near Gosford, New South Wales.

What a great product!

Works like a treat on big hairy huntsmen and tiny money spiders alike. Even grabs them when they're trying to hide in corners if you get your technique right.

Photo shows reason we bought one, but hasnt reappeared after clumsy icecream dish removal. Have now bought two more of these for others, following the success of our original purchase. Hasnt caught a spider yet but many a large moth and even more dummies from down the wall side of my sister's cot.

This is possibly the best gadget I've ever bought! It is vey easy to use and actually quite fun. After catching my first invader I have also used it to relocate the orb weavers from our deck to the garden. It's also handy for rescuing the unfortunate small critters that our cat brings inside such as skinks and cicadas without harming them (she's pretty useless as a hunter so they're normally unharmed). The suppled hook needs to be surdier, though, as it slips right off.

Big hairy huntsman spiders love our house...sadly I am the only one in my family who can live peacefully with them! My family sleep much better at night, knowing that I am around with my trusty spider catcher.None of them are brave enough to actually use it...no, that's brave mama's job!

Great idea. Hate harming spiders but I'm also a big baby when it comes to them. This looks great and seems to be easy to use but I would have to say I won't be trying it until there is one with a much, much longer handle!

This has been great for catching spiders (or so my husband tells me). Only two things we would fault - the hanging hook it comes with is too lightweight and doesn't stay on the wall, and the plastic cap is really hard to pull off, not ideal when you're in a hurry to catch a moving spider! But the best device we have found, might even have a go myself one day!

Alf Conlon

Great for catching any creepy-crawly - except for huntsmen, they're waaaaay too fast and slippery. My girlfriend has overcome most of a dread fear of spiders since she started using it too. The compact one is a bit short, so stick to the long one.

Mandy Loveland has given this product a 1 star rating | Not for me
With a life long fear of any spider big or small I couldn't get the picture of the spider catcher off my screen quick enough. The only contact I have with a spider (if any at all) is when it is flat under my shoe, or thwacked with a roled up newspaper! The catcher is however a useful invention I'm sure if you are brave enough!
