"Curiously Strong" Altoids (made from the purest oil of peppermint) are many times stronger than ordinary mints. They have been made in Bridgend Wales to a traditional recipe for over 200 years. Smith & Company, the 19th Century London confectioners who developed the mints, called them "Altoids" from the Latin alt (to change) and the Greek oids (taking the form of).

More than just a breath mint, Altoids were originally designed to soothe upset stomachs. In the 1920's ads ran claiming that "Altoids act as an antidote to poisons in the stomach. One or two taken after meals will stop any poisonous fermentation." The same ads launched the "curiously strong" messaging ... along with many jokes about the perils of British food. Since then, they have been used by all sorts of people, for all sorts of reasons e.g. by actors prior to romantic scenes. (Also, a search of the Internet has revealed an even racier "romantic" usage, but we might not go into that here.)

The packaging is a big part of the experience. The distinctive collectible metal tins were introduced early last century and have since been (re)used for everything from the storage of household items such as nails, paper clips, coins ... to doubling as emergency wilderness stoves.

I try to have a tin of each at my desk, and the peppermint in my car. The first thing my nephew does when he gets in my car is open up the compartment where they're stored to help himself to a mint! I just can't find mints I like better.

My most memorable exposure to the cult of the Altoids tin was in 1998. Matt Bernardini, the CTO of Organic in New York, displayed a passion for Altoids tins. Every available surface in his office was furnished with the cute red empties.

Please? The cinnamon ones have deceptively chalky yet creamy texture but with a cinnamon heat to blow the top off your head.
